Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Interdisciplinary Materials Science Summer Program at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York

2020 REU dates: June 8 – August 14

The application site is now closed

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the CCMR Educational Programs Office has cancelled

the 2020 REU program

The REU Site: Interdisciplinary Materials Research for Undergraduates and the Cornell Center for Materials Research co-organize and co-support a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in 2020.  Students work directly with faculty on interdisciplinary materials research projects involving chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering disciplines. Students will also participate in an organized program of lectures, laboratory visits, and a variety of recreational activities.

The 10-week program takes place on Cornell’s Ithaca campus and includes: a stipend valued at $5,600; housing in a Cornell University dorm; and additional travel funds for nonCU students, all of which require residency at Cornell campus, attendance of all program sessions, and completion of assigned projects.

  • REU is open to current undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and fulfill the following application requirements:
    • Two Letters of Recommendation
    • Recent School Transcripts
    • Statement of Interest
  • Selection is based on academic standing and faculty recommendations.
  • Minority and female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • All chemistry, physics, and engineering majors are welcome to apply.
  • Housing is provided; meals are not included.
  • This REU Program uses a rolling admission process beginning October 31st, until positions are filled. The earlier your application is completed, the better your chance for acceptance.

Support for the REU program is provided by the NSF REU Site program (DMR-1757420; 2020 support for 11 students) and the NSF MRSEC program (DMR-1719875; 2020 support for 6 students).

Please note: the REU application is hosted on a third-party site.
Cornell students interested in REU opportunities are encouraged to apply outside of Cornell University

If you have any questions regarding the REU program, please contact ccmr_reu@cornell.edu.
