The Statistics of the A-B transition in 3He

Project Description: Superfluid 3He exhibits two phases – the A phase which exists at high pressure and near the superfluid to normal fluid transition and the B phase which fills most of the phase diagram in pressure and temperature. The transition from A to B is first order– it displays hysteresis and supercooling. We plan to explore the statistics of the nucleation of the B phase from the A phase at various pressures and in low magnetic fields. As an REU student, you will learn about phase transitions, the physics of achieving and measurement of sub-millikelvin temperatures, as well as data acquisition, analysis and display techniques. The A and B phases are sensed by using quartz “tuning forks”, whose mechanical Q and Frequency are different in the two superfluid phases.
