Characterizing Bone Tissue with Raman Microscopy

Professor: Eve Donnelly
donnelly
Project Description:The Donnelly Research Group in Materials Science and Engineering studies the effects of diseases and medications on bone. Bone is a living tissue that continuously adapts to its environment, making it a complex material with interesting properties. The focus of our lab is the characterization of microstructure and mechanical properties of skeletal tissues across multiple length scales. Within the bone community, Raman spectroscopy has been widely used to analyze bone; however, the Raman technique has yet to be explicitly validated by comparing it to other standard characterization methods. Performing this validation will be the students main focus for this summer REU. This is a well-defined project and the student will be directly involved in preparing a methods publication. The student will learn to use many techniques including Raman microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) imaging, and x-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the student will be exposed to the practice of preparing and handling bone samples.
