VSM measurements, alive and better! (May 2013)

VSM-1t33pzg-150x150

Vibrating Sample Magnetometry, a technique for rapidly measuring magnetic properties, was dead on campus for a while, however this VSM module was recently purchased for use on the PPMS system in Clark Hall. A linear motor (pictured) vibrates a magnetic sample up to 4mm wide, at 40Hz, allowing for rms sensitivites of<10^-6 emu. VSM capabilities are significantly enhanced by PPMS capabilities, namely 1.9K to 400K temperature range and a maximum applied field of 9 Tesla. Manufacturer application notes here.
