The B-nano AirSEM provides a platform to image biological and materials samples in a single stage, combining optical, fluorescence, and scanning EM abilities. The optical set up (objectives of 5X, 20X and 100X and 100X UV) serves to locate and fine tune in areas of interest before transferring the sample to the SEM (resolution of 10nm). The sample remains in air (atmosphere) facilitating time-lapse studies and observation of changes in real time. The SEM has backscatter, surface and X-ray detectors for composition analysis. Samples do not need to be coated, or dehydrated, saving time and allowing for imaging of biological samples and solution samples which are incompatible with a high vacuum environment in their native state. A fluorescence set up is currently in the works, which will expand the correlative light and EM capabilities of the AirSEM.
A wide range of samples can be imaged on the airSEM, such as leaves, soil samples, pieces of paint, batteries and computer chips.
